A few more runs in the beetle bringeth the total to almost 100 miles! We had a trip to the friendly local tyre shop yesterday to have the BRMs sorted out. All four fitted without a hitch, but the hitches started pretty quickly afterwards. Turns out that the front of the ’64 is so low that the addition of almost 15-stone of driver makes it impossible to turn the wheel! Bravely I headed off regardless, but was defeated by the deviation from a straight line! The only solution, back on the jack again to put the original front wheels on again. Bollocks. Looks like the offset of the alloys is too much for the available clearance.

And so now we’re back off to Brookside VW Aircooled in Hopwood for another list of things. Top of the list being having the front slightly raised, beam narrowed and rear lowered a touch to get the stance right. Plus a list of little things while we’re about it. A fairly harrowing trip down the M42 at a whopping 55mph was brightened by the sight of a light blue 70s Bay Bus in my mirror for the duration, and once underway it was a nice trip – top down, sun shining. Thanks to Andy for the lift back again! And thanks to Simon & Martin for their ongoing love for my car!

Whilst I was there I saw the ’64 Split screen camper again – a walkthrough deluxe. It hasn’t got a floor and the bottom foot of the whole thing has got pretty terrible rust worm. But I still love the thing! And so it’s off I go to seek permission from the boss for a family wagon!
