A little while since the last update, frankly because the last few weeks passed without major incident. No breakdowns, no electrocution… pretty dull really. ’64 has been used for all runs involving guitar playing, teaching, karate and swimming… or any trip less than 5 miles so I could walk home if I had to!
This week culminated with a trip down the motorway at a terrifying 50mph for about 20 miles to get to Fellows Speed Shop. The Beetle just hasn’t sat right since it was lowered years ago – probably due in no small part recently to the fact I’m 3-stone heavier than I was before… and the suspension cannae take it!
So, 20 bone-shaking and pant-shitting miles in the Beetle culminate with a chat with Perry – the main man, specialist in Subaru conversions and awesome Camper work in general. Agreed that a 4″ narrowed beam up front would bring the wheels in and stop them smashing into the arches every time I run over a pebble, and some adjustable spring plates out back to drop the rear about 3 inches.
It’s gonna look freakin’ sweet when it’s done!
After the discussion and lowering plans, Perry’s awesome wife gave me a life to the train station. Only it’s been years since I’ve attempted a train, and I was in bastard Alvechurch! (nothing wrong with Alvechurch, just a long way from home)
So, about 40 minutes on a train I’d swear I can walk faster than, a confused walk through Grand Central for what sounds like the simple matter of getting from platform 8 to 3a. 3 ticket barriers! Finally got home about 3 hours after I set out, but hey… I finally found something the Beetle is quicker than – a Chiltern line train!
Now it’s just a matter of waiting a few days to confirm the scope of work, which basically boils down to whether my enormous duff has killed the shocks in the car. Then agree to whatever they say and hope to get the car back in time for a few more rides before a winter clean and tuck up in covers for the colder months.
Happy Bugging Everyone!
